Honey, grab your rainbow flags and get ready to make some noise because IDAHOBIT is serving up fierce resistance and fabulous celebration this May! 🌈
What's the Tea on IDAHOBIT?
Back in 1990 (yes, that recent), the World Health Organisation finally got their act together and removed homosexuality from their Classification of Diseases. About. Damn. Time. This watershed moment is why we celebrate IDAHOBIT every May 17th.
But darling, let's spill some historical tea - this celebration hasn't always been a walk in the pride park. The name's had more changes than a drag queen during a five-minute medley:
- 2005: IDAHO (International Day Against Homophobia)
- 2011: IDAHOT (added Transphobia because inclusivity is everything)
- 2018: IDAHOBIT (added Biphobia, Intersex discrimination because we're all in this together)
- 2022: Day Against LGBTQIA+ Discrimination (serving full alphabet realness)
Why We Still Need IDAHOBIT
Listen up, because these numbers are giving us the wrong kind of drama: 68% of LGBTQIA+ employees are still playing hide and seek at work, two-thirds of our queer youth face identity-based abuse, and 35% of us have copped verbal abuse in the past year alone. Not cute, not cute at all.
